A look at the Selangor MB frontrunners: Amirudin vs Dr Idris
KLANG: In less than a week, Selangor will have a new mentri besar, but who will fill the state government's most important position is still shrouded in mystery.
Currently, Sungai Tua assemblyman Amirudin Shari and Ijok assaemblyman Dr Idris Ahmad have been identified as the frontrunners.
Gynaecologist Dr Idris is the preferred candidate of PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
He has also been endorsed by the Selangor chiefs of Pakatan Harapan partner parties DAP, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia and Parti Amanah Negara.
Dr Wan Azizah’s preference for Dr Idris to lead the state has also been officially conveyed to the Selangor palace, and it is now up to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to decide who it will be.
However, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told The Star there is no news yet about who will be the Selangor mentri besar.
“We have to wait,” said Fahmi.
Meanwhile, a majority of Selangor PKR elected representatives are rooting for Amirudin to get the job.
A PKR state assemblyman who declined to be named said they had more confidence in Amirudin.
“This is his second term as an exco (executive committee) member and he has the experience and knowledge on how to manage the position,” he said.
Another Pakatan assemblyman, who is not from PKR, said Amirudin had a better nose for the job.
“This is Amirudin's third term as assemblyman and he is a grassroots politician who rose up from the bottom of his party’s political hierarchy,” said the assemblyman.
Given this, he added, Amirudin had the experience to serve the state's populace with efficacy.
Dr Idris, on the other hand, said the assemblyman, was already a well-established professional when he came into politics and lacked grassroots experience.
“Amirudin also has the right aura and will attract the younger generation who make the bulk of the electorate,” he added.
Dr Idris is a loyalist of PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim whilst Amirudin is perceived as a protégé of incumbent Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
The new mentri besar is scheduled to be sworn on June 19.
