Bisaya ethnic group welcomes visitors to fest

MIRI: The Bisaya minority ethnic group in Limbang district in northern Sarawak will be holding their Pesta Babulang in Kampung Batu Danau from June 8 to 10.

Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Gumbang said the Bisaya want to turn their annual event into a tourist draw.

“We expect 10,000 folk mostly from Brunei to attend.

“A buffalo race, food festival and handicraft exhibition will be the main attractions.

“More efforts are needed from the state and federal tourism promotion authorities to publicise festivals like this,” he said at a briefing with the organising committee.

Paulus said traditional pastimes of the group are different.

“The buffalo race is unique.

“You will not find such events in cities and towns.

“There is a need to include this event in the official tourism calendar,” he said, adding it could be used to generate income for villagers.

Paulus said the state and federal authorities should allocate more resources for the event.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan will launch the festival on June 8.
