Boys attacked at home by lion dance troupe rivals

JOHOR BARU: The rivalry between two lion dance troupes took an ugly turn when three teenage boys, including two brothers, were beaten up by a group of 15.

It is learnt that the victims – two brothers and their friend, aged between 13 and 16 – were assaulted in the brothers’ home in Taman Nusa Bestari here.

Three of the alleged attackers have been arrested.

The siblings’ father said at about 8pm on March 31 the group of men came into the house.

“It was very scary for my sons and their friend,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He added that he was at the police station to lodge a report at the time, after the family received threats from the rival group.

“My wife was at home and tried to protect my sons but there were too many of them.

“She escaped through the back door,” he said.

The father said the rivalry began after a lion dance group was set up at the school which the three boys attend.

The father added that at first, the boys were part of the troupe but he was not happy that it was withholding information from the school authorities.

“I decided to set up a new lion dance troupe for the students and this upset the other team.

“It might have caused friction,” he added.

He said two TV sets, four computers, several items of furniture and windows in the house were also broken during the attack.

When contacted, Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm Noor Hashim Mohamad confirmed the case and said three suspects in their 20s had been detained to facilitate investigations under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.

He urged anyone with information on the case to contact the state police hotline at 07-221 2999 or lodge a report at the nearest station.
