Celebrity chef wows guests with his skills and unique dishes

KOTA KINABALU: Celebrity chef Datuk Ismail Ahmad set the kitchen at a hotel here “on fire” during the showcase of his signature Malay dishes held in conjunction with the month of Ramadan.

A crowd gathered at the Promenade Hotel cafe to witness Chef Ismail in action, as he prepared one of his 17 signature “Dapur Berapi” (Kitchen on Fire) dishes – Nasi Ulam Chef Ismail – in a half-hour cooking demonstration.

This was followed by a cook-off between mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai and local celebrity Tian Long to determine which contestant could whip up the best version of Nasi Ulam Chef Ismail.

Yeo and his “bright” version of Nasi Ulam emerged victorious against Tian Long and his “kaw” (intensely flavoured) Nasi Ulam.

The event ended with the breaking of fast and guests were treated to Promenade Cafe’s Sungkai (breaking of fast) buffet, which has over 200 Ramadan dishes including 17 of Chef Ismail’s signature ones, namely Gulai Lemak Telur Itik, Asam Pedas Ikan, Ayam Kurma, Ayam Percik Kelantan, Bubur Lambuk, Daging Bakar Air Asam Kerisik, Daging Masak Hitam, Kerabu Mangga Rebung, Kerabu Pucuk Paku and Taugeh, Ketupat Sotong, Laksa Asam, Lawar Jantung Pisang, Lemak Cili Padi Daging Salai, Nasi Minyak, Nasi Ulam Chef Ismail, Sambal Udang and Air Bandung Chef Ismail.

All the dishes are served on rotation basis on top of the existing international buffet dinner spread.

Guests would be able to enjoy these scrumptious dishes throughout the month of Ramadan for RM138 per adult and RM69 per child aged between six and 12 years.
