El Tayeb dumps world No. 1 El Sherbini in US Open
PETALING JAYA: Nour El Sherbini has come up short again in her bid to win the US Open squash championships title.
The Egyptian, a two-time world champion, has never won the prestigious US title, having finished runner-up twice – in 2014 and 2016.
And the world No. 1 was kept waiting for another year after falling to an 11-13, 11-5, 5-11, 7-11 quarter-final loss to compatriot Nour El Tayeb at the Drexel University in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
World No. 14 El Tayeb, also a US Open runner-up in 2015, took the first set 13-11 before Nour stormed back to take the second 11-5.
The 24-year-old El Tayeb then began to fire winners from every corner to seal victory after 47 minutes.
El Tayeb will now meet England’s world No. 4 Laura Massaro in a repeat of the 2015 final.
The 33-year-old Massaro ousted Hong Kong’s Annie Au 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 in the other quarter-final.
In the men’s event, Englishman Nick Matthew dumped compatriot Daryl Selby 15-13, 11-2, 11-8 to set up a last four clash against world No. 3 Mohamed El Shorbagy of Egypt.
