Fabulous fusion of flavours

GOING retro is certainly in vogue, but few eateries make it as tantalisingly delicious as the Charlie Chaplin-inspired 17 Kelawei in Penang.

Occupying a century-old colonial bungalow along shady Kelawei Road, it dishes up novel combinations of Nyonya, Asian and Western flavours.

They are created by executive chef Ong Kean Wah, an experienced hand with 30 years in the industry, and the young and inventive head chef Daniel Ko.

Look forward to unique items like the Scotch Egg with minced pork and herb crust, Atlantic Chilled Salmon with Mango Kerabu and Spaghetti Al' Chinese Dry Sausage.

The Kimchi Pork Schnitzel gives a German classic the K-pop treatment, while the Pandan Creme Brulee is French in spirit but Malaysian in character.

Not all dishes fuse elements from the East and West in one plate, as there are also authentic offerings from both sides of the divide – like the Mushroom Cappucino with Cheese Bread and 70% Dark Chocolate Parfait from the West.

Closer to home are familiar delicacies like Nyonya Chilli Prawns, Fish Head Curry, Fish Stomach Gulai Tumis and Nyonya Kadok Tau Foo, among many others.

Savour the Fish Stomach Gulai Tumis that comes with various accompaniments.

The restaurant now has set lunch from Mondays to Fridays (11.30am to 2.30pm). Priced from RM26++ onwards, it starts with a soup or salad.

Main options are Seabass Fillet, Barbecued Chicken, Spaghetti Al Black Soy Pork, Crispy Noodles with Seafood or Pork Loin. Dessert is Nyonya Kuih.

It recently introduced a breakfast menu too, with offerings like the Croque Madame, Satay Scrambled Eggs, Eggs Benedict, Full English Breakfast and Oldish Breakfast to get you going for the day. Prices start at RM15.90++.

In the afternoons, drop by for High Tea priced at RM58++ for two, with light bites such as Sambal Shrimp Sandwiches, Loh Bak, Rose Panna Cotta and more.

The restaurant is split into several distinct spaces, some of which can be closed off for privacy and host functions for up to 120 pax.

On Nov 8, it will play host to the Creative Chef Pasta Challenge 2017 organised in collaboration with the Penang Chef's Association.

Split into Professional and Amateur categories, it offers cash prizes totalling RM3,000.
