Fadhil lays claim to 1km time trial berth
KUALA LUMPUR: Muhd Fadhil Mohd Zonis (pic) has staked a strong claim to be the nation’s best bet for gold in the men’s 1km time trial at the Asian Cycling Championships in Nilai, Negri Sembilan from Feb 16-20 next year.
Fadhil did that by bagging gold for Malaysia in the event at the Track Asia Cup leg in New Delhi, India, yesterday.
The 19-year-old track cyclist clocked 1:04.028 to take top spot ahead of Saudi Arabia's Abdulaziz Alkhuwaytim (1:05.858) and India’s Sahil Kumar (1:06.645).
Fadhil had also upset his more fancied teammate Muhd Shah Firdaus Sahrom to the gold in the same event at the Kuala Lumpur SEA Games in August.
“I’m happy with the time we didn’t undergo any special training,” said the Selangor-born Fadhil.
“I did not go all out as we slowed down training right after the KL SEA Games.
“The reason we are competing in New Delhi is to gain points to qualify for the new World Cup-season.
“I hope to race in this event at the Asian meet, but I’m not sure who the coach will pick because only one rider can represent the country.”
