First motion at Umno AGM is for top two party posts to be uncontested
KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Annual General Assembly 2017 started Thursday with a motion for the two top party posts to be uncontested in the party elections next year.
The motion was put forward by Umno Youth wing representative Datuk Mohamad Sahfri Ab Aziz (pic) from Rompin while debating the policy speech by party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak presented earlier Thursday.
"Representing the Umno Youth movement, I want to suggest that the president remain as the party president and for Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to fill the vacancy of the Umno deputy president post.
"These two posts also do not need to be contested unanimously with agreement from all 191 Umno divisions," he said.
Mohamad Sahfri also made a motion for Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein to retain his position as Umno vice-president.
He said this was not meant to sideline party elections, but rather to show the spirit of loyalty and a winning mentality.
Najib is party president, but the deputy president post has been vacant since Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was suspended in February last year.
Umno sacked Muhyiddin four months later and Dr Ahmad Zahid, then a party vice-president, was appointed by the Umno supreme council to carry out the duties of acting deputy president.
