Free talk on dealing with bullies
FIGHTING with bullies will not solve the problem of bullying, said Malaysian Psychological Association president Dr Goh Chee Leong.
Goh, who is also Help Inter-national School education services chief executive officer, will be giving a StarLIVE talk on bullying this Saturday, titled “Creating a Culture of Kindness Against Bullying” from 10am to noon at the SP Setia headquarters in Setia Alam, Shah Alam.
This talk is part of the #StandTogether bullying prevention campaign jointly organised by R.AGE and SP Setia with the aim of creating an annual National Kindness Week in schools every first week of April.
His focus will be about educating participants on how to combat the problem by changing the mindset of bullies and helping them see society and the community in a different way.
“We need to help them heal by showing them love, compassion and kindness.
“Bullies need to see that love is more powerful than hate and that you won’t achieve anything by pushing someone around, for example,” said Goh.
Goh added that there was always a root cause to bullying, and teachers, parents and friends needed to help the bullies see clearly.
“Are they bullying to seek attention or venting anger and frustration?
“Once we know the cause, we can demonstrate kindness and help them heal by offering healthier alternatives,” he said.
He added that most bullies were often insecure and needed to seek validation in society.
