Gerakan’s Mah urges members to counter false info aggressively

GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan members have been told to be more aggressive in engaging the people on social media to counter the dissemination of false information.

Its president Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong (pic) said the party needs more active "keyboard champions" to win the cyber battle.

"We came under attack in the last two elections, so we hope more Gerakan members will go online to champion the party and Barisan Nasional.

"Our cyber troopers need to spread the truth and facts. I think that is our role," he told a press conference after opening the state Gerakan Delegates' Conference on Sunday.

He said the fierce battle of perception was being waged through social media and Gerakan keyboard champions must correct misconceptions and lies.

In his speech earlier, Mah said he has been the target of the Opposition's cyber troopers who insulted him on a daily basis.

"I've been president for three to four years. Never before have I been insulted so often.

"We must fight against such distortions before things become worse," he said.

He also urged Gerakan members to be disciplined and loyal to the party.

"Those selected as candidates, fight with your heart and soul, and the rest must also support the candidates with your heart and soul," he said.

Mah, in his speech, praised former party president and Penang chief minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, who was present, for his immense contribution to the state.

Also present was Penang MCA chairman Datuk Tan Teik Cheng.

On the coming general election, Mah said he is happy to see everyone is focused on the mission.

"Gerakan actually has a long history in Penang. Although we suffered setbacks in 2008 and 2013, I think we are stronger today.

"I can see that the mood is very different and Penang Gerakan is ready for the next general election," he said.
