Hafizh Syahrin's place as first Malaysian MotoGP rider confirmed

KUALA LUMPUR: Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah (pic) has been confirmed to ride full-time for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 for the new MotoGP season following his performance in testing in Buriram, Thailand last week.

The 23-year-old is the first Malaysian rider to enter the premier class of the world full-time as he joins two-time Moto2 world champion Frenchman Johann Zarco in the team's line up.

Hafizh impressed in Thailand with his rapid progress, high motivation and learning curve during his first-ever test aboard the Yamaha YZR-M1, ending the test in 21st spot and only 1.7 seconds off the fastest lap time set by Spaniard Dani Pedrosa of Repsol Honda Team.

The announcement means that Malaysia will have full representation in the world championship with Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Khairul Idham Pawi in Moto2 while Adam Norrodin will start in the Moto3 category.

"I just got the call from team manager Herve Poncharal informing me of the good news after consulting with the team sponsors," said a beaming Hafizh.
