Heavy rain caused river to break banks and sweep biker away
THE sudden floods in Hulu Langat on Saturday which resulted in a motorcyclist being swept away is believed to have been caused by unusually heavy rain that raised the water level and caused Sungai Langat to overflow.
According to Selangor Infrastructure Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib, the heavy rain persisted for two hours that day likely led to the river breaking its banks.
He said there had been similar incidents of flooding in the area before.
“However, this was the worst, and the rainfall was recorded at 135mm,” Zaidy said.
He added, however, that the area was not prone to flash floods.
Nonetheless, Zaidy said the river was situated too close to the road, and this led to the the motorcyclist being swept away.
Captured on a smartphone camera, the video (see link below) which went viral shows the man trying to hold on to his submerged motorcycle. A man in a black shirt wades in to try to help the victim, but to no avail.
After being swept away, the motorcyclist is seen floating for several metres before his helmet comes off and the video ends abruptly.
The fate of the man has not been ascertain so far.
Meanwhile, Zaidy he was waiting for a complete report on the flooding incident from the relevant authorities, including the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) before deciding on the next course of action.
Preliminary investigation, he said, revealed that it was caused by the extra heavy rain and not due to human errors.
“It was a disaster, and we have to wait for the complete report before making an actual assessment of the situation,” he said.
