Hire a tour guide to be safe, foreign tourists advised

PONTIAN: Foreign tourists, including Singaporeans, should engage the services of a tour guide especially if they are unfamiliar with tourist sites in Johor.

State tourism, domestic trade and consumerism committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said that Johor had ample tour guides or agencies to assist foreigners visiting Johor.

He said tour guides not only helped to show visitors around but ensured tourists’ safety and that they abide by rules and regulations at tourist sites.

Tee said places like the Gunung Pulai recreational park had strict rules and regulations in place to ensure the safety of visitors.

“It is not advisable for hikers to go off trek or use a prohibited route without seeking permission from the authorities.

“Visitors are always advised not to wander off from the designated areas when they arrive at the park,” he said.

He said this after presenting Chinese New Year aid to some senior citizens and needy families here.

Tee was commenting on a case where two Singaporeans reportedly went missing during a hike at the Gunung Pulai forest reserve in Kulai on Feb 5.

The two identified as Clarice Lum and Dominick Tan, both 27, were rescued by the authorities after they were spotted by a rescue team in a helicopter at Ulu Choh in Pontian.

A rescue boat was sent to pick them up at the location which was by a lake and they were later sent to the Pontian Hospital for treatment.
