IGP: Zaid Ibrahim could be investigated for sedition

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pic) could be investigated under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948 for disrespecting Selangor's Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

Mohamad Fuzi added on Thursday that the former de-facto law minister could also be investigated for an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for disrespecting the Selangor Sultan on his Twitter account.

Zaid posted two tweets against the Sultan on the micro-blogging site on Monday, cautioning the Sultan to be careful with his words and accusing him of allegedly "playing politics".

Zaid had tweeted on Wednesday that the Ruler should be "careful" with his words and that everyone would be affected if "the country burns".

His tweets are believed to have been in response to the Sultan's statements in an exclusive interview with The Star where he warned that the deliberate use of sensitive issues to fish for votes in the general election would destroy the country.

The Sultan said he did not wish to see politicians playing with matters of race, religion and other sensitive issues for political gain.
