Ismail says he's willing to 'take on' Muhyiddin
JOHOR BARU: Pagoh Umno division acting chief Ismail Mohamed (pic) says he is willing to take on his "teacher" Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in the next general election.
Ismail, who is Bukit Serampang assemblyman, said he would abide by any decision taken by the party that he contest the Pagoh parliamentary seat, now held by Muhyiddin for the fifth term.
"The issue of anak murid lawan bekas cikgu (a student versus a former teacher) does not arise at all," he told a press conference on Tuesday after attending the closing ceremony of the Urban Farming 2017 seminar here.
Ismail said Pagoh Umno remained strong without Muhyiddin, the former deputy prime minister and Pagoh Umno chief, who was sacked from Umno and later set up Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.
"We have 106 branches in Pagoh Umno division with about 20,000 members, and only 2,000 to 3,000 of our members have joined Pribumi," said Ismail.
He said the main focus for Pagoh Umno was "to close ranks and strengthen the party's machinery" to face the general election, which must be held by next year.
Bukit Serampang is one of three state seats in the Pagoh parliamentary constituency.
