Kisona bounces back from a game down to stun top seed Ying Ying
PETALING JAYA: Shuttler S. Kisona (pic) showcased her potential by winning the seventh-tier Malaysian International Series for her second successive title.
And the 18-year-old did it in style as she came from a game down to beat senior and top seed Lee Ying Ying 16-21, 21-15, 21-17 in yesterday’s all-Malaysian final in Putrajaya.
World No. 49 Ying Ying, who was seeking her first title of the year to boost her preparations for next month’s Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, started strongly by winning the first game.
But world No. 190 Kisona, the winner of the seventh-tier Victor International Series in Surabaya in May, fought back to stun the 19-year-old Ying Ying after a 59-minute battle.
And Kisona, who suffered a serious knee injury in 2014, was delighted with her progress.
“I think I just went in there with the mindset of trying to overcome my senior,” said Kisona.
“Ying Ying has played in more international tournaments than me. I only joined the senior team this year and the pressure wasn’t on me.
“It’s a really good win. Now, I no longer fear taking on the seniors,” added Kisona who is looking to break into the world’s top 100 this year.
She is on the right track as the win in Putrajaya will see her climb more than 50 rungs to the top 140 for the first time.
Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi also continued their blossoming partnership as they bagged their second straight women’s doubles title.
Fie Cho-Jing Yi, the champions in Surabaya, defeated Thailand’s Kittipak Dubthuk-Natcha Saengchote 21-16, 21-17 in the final.
The Malaysian camp enjoyed a third win after independent pair Lee Jian Yi-Lim Zhen Ting beat Chen Tang Jie-Soh Wooi Yik 24-22, 21-19 for the men’s doubles crown.
There was, however, no joy for Cheam June Wei as he came up short in his bid for his first senior title.
The world No. 148, who had beaten top seed Vladimir Malkov of Russia in the third round, lost 19-21, 14-21 to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles final.
