La Salle Games returns on Saturday

THE Malaysian Federation of Lasallian Alumni Associations (MFOLSA) and the De La Salle Brothers of Malaysia are holding a competitive sports carnival called “La Salle Games” at SMK La Salle PJ this Saturday.

The interschool sports carnival will see eight schools under the La Sallian network including La Salle PJ, La Salle Brickfields, La Salle Klang, La Salle Sentul, St John’s Institution (KL), St Paul’s Institution (Seremban), St Francis Institution (Melaka) as well as St John’s International (KL) competing in six sports – all in the under-14 category.

The one-day tournament will be featuring football, hockey, badminton, table-tennis, basketball as well as a relay road run.

The school with the biggest number of wins will win the La Salle Games Challenge Shield.

La Salle Games organising chairman Nantha Vaithilingam said, “This will be an annual sports competition, and plans are afoot from next year, 2019, to include all the La Salle schools in Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak.

“We are reviving the ‘La Salle Games’ after 30 years since it was last held in 1989 after which the sports event was forced to discontinue by some government bodies at that time.

‘’Our aim is to revive the focus on sporting excellence and generate tomorrow’s sports stars through ‘La Salle Games’,” he said.

Many Malaysian sports icons emerged through La Salle Games. They include badminton’s Datuk James Selvaraj, Yew Cheng Hoe and Moo Foot Lian, hockey stars such as Freddie Vias, the Sta Marias and the Van Huizens as well as footballers Chow Chee Keong, Wong Choon Wah and John Engkatesu, said Nantha.

The La Salle Games 2018 is sponsored by Bata, Milo and F&N.

MFOLSA has also launched a crowdfunding exercise to raise RM66,000 that will go towards the cost of running the La Salle Games.

It covers the costs of events infrastructure, technical resources (equipment, referees, officials), prizes, food catering as well as transportation and logistics.

The public, including alumni members, teachers and parents are invited to contribute towards this important community initiative.
