Large crowd at Kerk Kim Hock's funeral

MELAKA: Hundreds turned up to pay their last respects to former DAP secretary-general Kerk Kim Hock, who died of cancer last Wednesday.

DAP stalwarts including Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng were among those present at the funeral at Taman Kenanga in Kampung Lapan here.

The atmosphere was sombre as Kerk’s remains were brought to the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih, Selangor for burial.

Kerk, 61, died at 6.10pm on Wednesday while being treated at a private medical centre for rectal cancer.

He was transferred to the centre after falling into a coma last Sunday following an operation for Deep Vein Thrombosis at a private medical centre in Subang Jaya, Selangor. Kerk leaves behind his wife Mook Kwai Mei, 52; son Kerk Chee Yee, 25; and daughter Kerk Chee Wan, 23.

Kim Hock was first diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2002 and had been cancer-free since 2007 before suffering a relapse in 2015.

He was also the former political secretary to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

Kin Hock was also Durian Daun assemblyman from 1986 to 1990; the Pasir Pinji/Ipoh Timur MP from 1990 to 1999; and also Kota Melaka MP from 1999 to 2004 before he quit politics.
