Lovebirds come full circle to tie the knot in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: They met in Penang seven years ago, now Tay Jia Wei and her fiance Cheah Shao Xiong are making a return trip here to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day.

Tay said Penang would always be a special place for them as their love blossomed while studying at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang.

“Now, we are in a long-distance relationship as I am working as a scientist in California while he is working as an engineer in Kuala Lumpur.

“We always wanted to come back to Penang for this, so we decided to register our marriage at the Penang Chinese Town Hall,” Tay from Kedah said yesterday.

She said Cheah, who is from Perak, popped the question in Japan last month while they were on a holiday.

“I was surprised and immediately said ‘yes’.

“We decided to register on Valentine’s Day as it is a special day and we have more reasons to celebrate it now,” she said, adding that they were still planning their wedding.

Tay and Cheah are among 47 couples who will marry at a mass wedding ceremony at the state National Registration Department, the town hall and the Che Hoon Khor Moral Uplifting Society today.
