MCA: Why court Zakir when he is so controversial
PETALING JAYA: The Home Ministry should look into why Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik was granted permanent residency (PR) when he is so controversial, says MCA.
Its religious harmony bureau chairman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker (pic) said the Government should not risk the country's spirit of mutual understanding and respect.
"The Government, especially the Home Ministry, must also account as to why Dr Zakir was granted PR status and special consideration seeing that he is known for creating tension," he said in a statement on Friday.
Ti said he found it disconcerting that Dr Zakir is allowed to practise in the country even though he has been a source of much uneasiness among Malaysia's multi-religious and multiracial community.
"The Government must take note of this general sentiment of discomfort and uneasiness," he said.
The Government, he said, has always promoted moderation, mutual understanding and respect.
"We should not risk these cherished values with Dr Zakir when, especially of late, there are elements of religious extremism and religious-based terrorism taking root in Malaysia.
"Malaysia has to be mindful not to acknowledge, accord special privileges or be seen to be giving special treatment to preachers like Dr Zakir who promote religious differences in a diverse society like ours," he said.
