Mediocre displays cost Kian Meng and Pei Jing Commonwealth Games spot
PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles pair Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing have paid a heavy price for their recent below-par performances.
The duo have been dropped from the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15.
The world No. 11 didn’t live up to expectations when they lost to teammates Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie twice – at the Malaysian Masters and Indonesian Masters last month.
Their misfortunes are Soon Huat-Shevon’s blessings as the duo were chosen for the Commonwealth Games. Soon Huat-Shevon have overtaken Kian Meng-Pei Jing and reached a career high No. 10 in the world.
The other mixed doubles players in the team are Rio Olympic silver medallists Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying.
Also axed from the Gold Coast squad is women’s doubles shuttler Woon Khe Wei.
The 28-year-old, who suffered a knee injury during the Asia Team Championships in Alor Setar last week, has been ruled out for at least six weeks.
Khe Wei is replaced by Chow Mei Kuan, who will form a scratch pair with Vivian Hoo.
Besides that, former world junior champion Goh Jin Wei’s place in the team is also in doubt after a less-than-impressive showing at the Asian meet.
“Jin Wei’s place is not secure because women’s singles head coach Datuk Tey Seu Bock is considering replacing her,” said the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria after a coaching and training committee meeting yesterday.
“We still have until March 7, which is the final closing date to submit the name list,” added Norza.
