Ministry allocates RM442mil for needy students in Sarawak
KUCHING: The Education Ministry has channelled RM442mil in aid to needy students in Sarawak this year.
Education director-general Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof said the school aid allocation was given to 400,000 students in 1,436 schools in Sarawak.
“The Education Ministry has allocated RM3bil as school aid this year.
“From that amount, RM442mil will be given to the 400,000 students in the state through three categories namely, general aid, special aid and one-off aid,” he told reporters after launching an education roadshow at Plaza Merdeka shopping mall, here.
Dr Khair said the ministry allocated RM89mil in the form of general aid which included schooling surcharge and the co-curriculum fee.
The special aid which amounted to RM319mil included the 1Malaysia Supplementary Food Programme, federal minor scholarships, sport scholarships and uniforms.
He said RM43mil was allocated for one-off aid such as the 1Malaysia Special Early School Aid and 1Malaysia book voucher.
On another matter, Dr Khair said the teacher exchange under the 90:10 ratio of local to peninsula educators serving in Sabah and Sarawak is being implemented gradually.
He said approval was based on merit, vacancies and family needs. - Bernama
