Penang juniors strut their stuff to emerge group champions

PETALING JAYA: Penang aim to be the badminton powerhouse in the junior ranks.

And the Pearl of the Orient showed they were on the right track by trouncing Sabah 5-0 to emerge as the Group A champions. The feat earned them a ticket to the boys’ quarter-finals at the National Finals of the inaugural AirAsia-BAM National Junior League.

Penang take on Group B runners-up Kelantan while Group B champions Selangor face Perak today at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

The other quarter-final match-ups are Kuala Lumpur vs Negri Sembilan and Perlis vs Johor. The final will take place tomorrow.

Penang team manager Ang Lay Heang said Selangor would be their main challengers.

“I’m not belittling the other teams but I’m quite confident with Penang’s chances in this inaugural league. Selangor are our closest rivals based on the team’s strength,” said Lay Heang.

The champions will be invited to join the national junior team at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

A total of 242 schools from all 14 states, comprising a total of 349 teams (200 boys’ teams and 149 girls’ teams) participated in the national junior league from October to December last year.
