Printers that protect themselves

Threats today don’t just target personal computers but printers as well, so HP’s new A3 multifunction (MFPs) printers are designed to monitor themselves.

The printers have a Sure Start feature which can restore the printers’ BIOS – the boot instructions that initiate the printer’s firmware – to the original state in case they become corrupted from an attack.

While the Whitelisting feature ensures that codes loaded into memory have not been tampered and if they are, the printers will reboot themselves into a clean, offline state and send an alert to the IT department.

“We are living in a new world order with connected devices and evolving attacks that often hit us when we least expect them,” said HP Malaysia managing director Kym Lim.

“By integrating security in every stage of the product development, we are reinventing security from protection to resilience, making life better and safer for our wide range of customers in Malaysia.”

Three A3 MFP printers were unveiled – the PageWide Managed P77760z, LaserJet Managed MFP E82540 and Color LaserJet Managed MFP E77825. As all three are MFPs, they come with printing, scanning and copying functions.

The P77760z is an inkjet that prints A4 pages at up to 80ppm (pages per minute). It has a print resolution of up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi (dots per inch) for monochrome and 2,400 x 1,200dpi for colour.

The E82540 monochrome laser printer prints A4 pages at up to 25ppm and resolution of up to 1,200 x 1,200dpi.

Lastly, the E77825 colour laser printer has a speed of up to 25ppm for monochrome and up to 25ppm for colour A4 pages. It supports up to 1,200 x 1,200dpi.

As all three enterprise printers are customisable, they don’t have a fixed price.

HP also unveiled the Sprocket Photo Printer. This pocket printer produces 2x3in colour printouts with a resolution of 313 x 400dpi.

Users just have to download the HP Sprocket app, available for Android and iOS, to print from their phones and tablets.

The Sprocket is priced at RM599 and comes in three colours – black, white and red.
