SMC’s Christmas tree stands tallest

SIBU: This year’s Christmas tree decoration contest stands apart from those held before here as the tallest tree by Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) this time around stands at 26.2m high.

Organising chairman councillor Connie Loh said last year, the tallest one by the council was just 16.8m.

“The tree is once again sponsored by council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King,” she said yesterday.

Loh said the 15 participants, mainly consisting of private companies, started decorating their trees on Dec 4.

“They need to complete their trees before judging takes place on Dec 10,” she said.

She hoped both the young and old would come in droves to the town square to see the Christmas trees, which would be on display until Dec 31.

“The objective of the council in organising this event is to strengthen peace and harmony in this multiracial society.

“As this year is also Visit Sibu Year, we want to add a festive vibe to the town with this contest and hope that everyone will come together to experience the joy and excitement of Christmas,” she added.

The organising committee members, she said, would be wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the words Love, Joy, Peace for the occasion.

The participants of the contest stand to win attractive cash prizes totalling RM8,100.

The announcement of the winners and prize-presentation ceremony would take place on Dec 31 at the Countdown 2018 event.

The winners would be picked based on several criteria such as ‘wow factor’, Christmas musical design, aesthetic, creativity, durability and sustainability.

The first prize winner will receive RM2,000, second place RM1,500, third place RM1,000 and RM300 consolation awards would be given to all other participants.

Yesterday, designer Peter Ting and his two workers were spotted rushing to complete Kingwood Hotel’s entry.

Ting, who is co-owner of Payung Cafe, was contracted by the hotel once again to design and complete the entry.

“This time, I am using coconut tree leaves as the main component for the entry.

“The hotel wants me to use natural products so I am going with coconut tree leaves,” he said.

He said 85 leaves were needed for the 6.1m Christmas tree.

“After cutting the leaves from the trees, I dried them for two weeks before painting them three different shades of blue,” he added.

Ting used a total of 10 five-litre paint tins for the job.

“I think our entry is unique and it is now up to the judges to decide,” he said.
