Sarawak records more than two million visitors
KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 2,097,766 visitor arrivals in the state in the first five months of this year, an increase of 291,223 visitors or 16.12% from the same period last year.
Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the figures also showed an increase of 273,130 foreign visitors or 31.27%, compared with the same period last year, which was 873,471 visitors.
Meanwhile, 561,532 visitors from peninsular Malaysia was recorded from Jan to May this year, compared with 456,821 for the same period last year, he told reporter here.
Earlier, Abdul Karim officiated at the AirAsia inaugural flight from Kuching to Langkawi, a new route which will operate with four flights weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Later Abdul Karim sent off the inaugural flight AK 5093, which departed from Kuching International Airport at 12.55 pm.
Abdul Karim in his speech said the state government was working closely with the low cost airline to have more direct flights to Sarawak, adding that other airlines were also most welcome to have their direct flights to Kuching.
He said Sarawak had great potential as a preferred tourist destination and he admitted that more needed to be done in order to make the state really a tourist destination. — Bernama
