Smart Lokap to go beyond Klang Valley
KUALA LUMPUR: Police will apply for allocations to expand the new Self-Monitoring Analytics Reporting Technology for Lock-ups (Smart Lokap) to other police stations outside the Klang Valley this year, says Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim.
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police said the larger stations would get priority.
“Since we’ve installed the system, we can detect the incidents earlier. It can also analyse aggressive actions and other attempts by detainees to escape.
“The new system requires less manpower and personnel can be retasked for outside duties,” he said during the Smart Lokap’s handing-over ceremony at the National Innovation and Creative Economy (Nice) Expo 2017.
Noor Rashid said the Smart Lokap system would also be beneficial to both police and detainees as footage and photos could be used as “convincing evidence” in court.
Since last year, 57 police lock-ups in the Klang Valley have been running the Smart Lokap system at a cost of RM3.5mil.
The system was developed between the police, the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry’s research arm Mimos Berhad, with input from Suhakam.
The Smart Lokap system was one of several innovations debuting at the Nice Expo, organised by Mosti with the aim of mainstreaming science and innovation in Malaysia’s socio-economic devleopment.
Launched by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Nice Expo 2017 will run until Monday.
In his speech, Dr Ahmad Zahid pointed out that environmental resources and financial capital were no longer primary indicators in measuring a country’s level of development.
He said although research and development expenditure had risen from 1.26% in 2014 to 1.3% in 2015, this was low compared to other developed countries.
“I urge the private sector to increase their expenditure in R&D.
“Markets will no longer be based in a marketplace, but a market ‘space’,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid, contrasting disruptive business models such as ride-hailing services and Airbnb with physical businesses.
