Thankful for generous hearts

KUCHING: Cancer patient Bujang Raba, 56, and his family can now look forward to celebrating Raya thanks to generous Malaysians.

Bujang, the sole breadwinner, has been unable to work since being diagnosed with advanced thyroid cancer last October.

The family faced a gloomy Raya as it had no source of income apart from a RM300 monthly assistance from the Welfare Department.

After Bujang’s plight was reported in The Star last week, kind-hearted Malaysians reached out to offer help and support.

Since then, the family has received some RM3,200 in donations as well as food, cookies and other daily necessities.

Bujang’s wife Saninah Morsit said individuals and representatives from non-governmental organisations such as Hikmah Sarawak visited the family to donate food supplies.

“People have given us food items like rice, sugar, biscuits, flour and Milo.

“An organisation gave us a new fan after noticing that one of our fans was not working.

“We are so thankful for all the help we have received. It is such a relief to know that there are people who care.

“It really eases our burden and makes us happy,” Saninah, 38, said at their home in Kampung Rampangi here.

Despite the tube in his throat, which made speaking difficult, Bujang expressed his thanks to all those who donated to his family.

“I am glad that we can now celebrate Raya and we wish everyone ‘Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri’,” he said.

Saninah said some of the money they received would be used to buy clothes for their three children aged eight, 13 and 17.

“The most important thing is for the children to be able to celebrate like other families.

“As for the rest of the donations, we will keep it for my husband’s medication and transportation to the hospital for check-up,” she said, adding that Bujang’s next hospital appointment was at the end of the month.
