Tourists stranded after Langkawi cable car breaks down
PETALING JAYA: Eighty-eight Langkawi SkyCab passengers were trapped in gondolas while another 800 tourists were stranded after the cable car system experienced a technical fault on Sunday evening.
Kedah Fire and Rescue Department spokesman Mohamad Mustakim Mukhtar said that the some 800 were stuck at two stations on Mount Machinchang, which is 713m high.
He added that a team of 16 rescue personnel had made their way to the location of the incident in Oriental Village, Teluk Burau after receiving a distress call at 6.53pm.
"As soon as the team arrived at 7.06pm, they helped the workers of the cable car company to bring the replacement parts to the first station by climbing the mountain," he said.
He added that repairs should be completed in two to three hours.
Note: An earlier version of this story said that 50 people were trapped in the gondolas. The Langkawi Fire and Rescue Department has, however, confirmed the number to be 88.
