Win-win deal for MP hopefuls
SIBU: One of the two SUPP’s potential candidates for Lanang parliamentary seat, Kelvin Kong, has gone to town with a simple slogan “Kelvin Wins”.
Banners of the slogan in three languages — English, Chinese and Bahasa Malaysia were being carried around during his walkabout at the central market to gather support from the people.
However, Kong, 46, denied that he had been selected by Barisan Nasional as candidate for the seat.
“Using the slogan does not mean that I am the candidate, and I cannot declare myself as one.
“What I am doing now is just preparing the groundwork,” he said.
Kong, who owns an oil and gas retail company with offices in Bintulu, Miri and Brunei, said he was not sure whether he would be fielded as the party had not made the choice between him and Bukit Assek SUPP Youth Wing chief Joseph Chieng, who is also a councillor with Sibu Municipal Council.
Kong is the deputy chairman of Dudong SUPP branch.
He said both he and Chieng had been actively serving the people. They also have a gentlemen’s agreement.
“We have a common understanding that the person fielded will get the full support from the other,” he said.
He added that the party was “very confident that the candidate would be from SUPP”.
SUPP’s splinter party, UPP has also proposed Andrew Ting as a potential candidate for the seat, last won by DAP’s Alice Lau with a majority of 8,630 votes.
