Good news, Donnie Yen fans! The Hong Kong martial arts superstar has confirmed that filming on the fourth instalment of the Ip Man franchise, Ip Man 4, will begin in 2018, which means we can probably expect the movie late 2018 or early 2019.
Yen announced the news on his official Facebook page recently, with the message “Some prefer to call me the I P MAN. Filming begins 2018, I am back!” and an image of the teaser poster featuring his hands behind his back, one curled into a fist.
Yen had previously announced via Facebook last September that he would be reprising his most iconic role as legendary Wing Chun master Ip Man, but this is the first news we’ve had about when we can expect the movie to be released.
The first Ip Man, released in 2008, was a massive hit, and spawned two more sequels – Ip Man 2 (2010) and Ip Man 3 (2015). The films are based on the life of Ip Man, the Wing Chun Grand Master who was instrumental in spreading the martial art of Wing Chun worldwide.
Wilson Yip, the director of the previous three Ip Man movies, will also be taking the helm for this sequel, while another Hong Kong legend, Yuen Woo Ping, will be handling the action choreography.
Yuen was also the action choreographer for Ip Man 3, having taken over Sammo Hung, who handled the first two films.
